Keywords
Nouns, names, adjectives, actions, concepts and even file formats can be searched for in the Search box. Keep it simple, use full words not abbreviations, and do not use punctuations like periods or apostrophes or Boolean tools like quotes or ands. Just words separated by spaces. Unless you are searching for shots that contain multiples of one thing, use the singular tense. For example, a search for houses will only result in those shots that have more than one house in them. We try to keep our verbs active, using "ing" most of the time. For example, birds flying. Advanced Search may be helpful in targeting your results. Or, after your results have displayed, use Filter Results on the top left of the page to refine your results.
Previewing clips
After your search results display, you can roll over any thumbnail frame to see a small flash preview movie or click on the thumbnail frame to launch a larger pop-up window with a downloadable QuickTime preview movie. If this larger window does not launch, please be sure your browser is enabled to allow pop-up windows. If the pop-up still does not display, check behind your browser page to see if it might be hiding. The larger preview clips are QuickTime movs in the H.264 codec. The majority of our preview clips are in their native frame rates of 30fps or 24fps. However, we have reduced the frame rate of some of our more elaborate preview movies to 15fps so that these larger files will play and download more efficiently. Most operating and editing systems can handle the H.264 codec with the known exception of Avid running on OS9. H.264 is included with QuickTime 7, which is recommended for use with this site. Most footagehead clips do not have sound. If sound is available it will be included in the preview movie and the master file.
Advanced Search and Filter Your Results
The options in Advanced Search and Filter Your Results are just some of the common ways to focus your search. Use Advanced Search only when you are doing an initial search. Use Filter Your Results after your results have displayed. Selecting any of the qualifiers in these boxes will limit the results that come back. Selecting more than one will produce only results that contain ALL of the items selected. For example, selecting aerial and lock-off will produce no results as the camera is never stationary when flying. These qualifiers and any others can also be added to your keyword search string.
Shot length
Most footagehead clips are approximately 10 seconds in length. If a clip justifies a longer duration, we will have created a sequence of clips for it that will run together when reassembled. For these sequences, add the keyword sequence to your search or look for a, b, c, etc. extensions on the clip ID.
Matching shots
Because narrative storytelling often requires the same shot at different times of day, we have indicated that there is another version of a shot with the word matching followed by the matching clip's ID number. To find the clip's partner, simply type the whole ID into the search box or page through your keyword search results until you get to it. If it is necessary that you find shots that match, select the matching day/night option in Advanced Search, Filter Your Results or simply add the word matching to your search string. |

All of footagehead's clips are 16x9 QuickTime movies, produced and available in varying formats and codecs. If format or codec is important, you will want to consider both the CAMERA FORMAT and the MASTER FORMAT (see below) when selecting your clips for purchase.
Camera formats
The majority of footagehead's clips were shot on high definition low bit rate cameras using interframe compression such as the Panasonic P2, the XDCAM HD (EX1), and various HDV cameras. Some clips were shot with less compression such as on Panasonic's Varicam and some were down-converted from HDCAM to DVCPRO HD. A select group of historical shots were up-converted from standard definition to HDV. All of footagehead's clips have an aspect ratio of 16 x 9 (widescreen).
The camera format is indicated in the details of the clip where it lists the following:
| |
camera |
codec |
sampling resolution |
bit rate |
| Example 1: |
P2 |
DVCPRO HD |
960x1080 |
13.7 MB/sec |
| Example 2: |
CANON A-1 |
HDV |
1440x1080 |
3 MB/sec |
Master Formats
When the camera format is a widely used one such as DCVPRO HD or HDV we have not changed or converted it so as to maintain the integrity of the shot. However, for less common codecs such as Apple ProRes422, we produced master files for download in more universal codecs such as PHOTO JPEG. Please Test Download to see if you have compatible codecs installed in your NLE.
The master format is indicated in the details of the clip where it lists the following:
| |
dimensions |
codec & format |
frame rate |
size |
| Example 1: |
1920x1080 |
HDV 1080i60 |
29.97 fps |
40MB |
| Example 2: |
1280x720 |
DVCPRO HD 720p60 |
23.98 fps |
56MB |
File sizes
The size of the master file for download will vary per clip depending on its length, codec, dimensions and bit rate. Master file sizes are indicated for each clip in its master file specs. Three average sized sample clips in three formats are posted for you to Test Download speed.

Clip Bin
Registration is required to save shots to a Clip Bin. When you find a shot that interests you and you click on the Add to Bin icon (+), if you are already registered and logged in, the clip will either go into a Clip Bin that you have set up and defaulted, you will be asked to select an existing Clip Bin, or you will be prompted to create a new Clip Bin. You can also set up new Clip Bins in Your Bins prior to searching. You may have as many Clip Bins as you'd like to keep your projects organized but if you have multiple active bins, we recommend that you not default any of them as your primary destination so that you may choose where they go each time. If you are not already logged in or registered, you will be prompted to do so before you can add clips to bins.
Clip Cart
When you are ready to purchase any of the shots in any of your bins simply select that bin from the pull-down menu at the top of the Clip Bin column, and click the right pointing arrows (>>) next to the shot you want to purchase to add it to your Clip Cart. If you are done with that Bin and would like to purchase shots from another, pull-down on the menu again and open another Bin. You have one Clip Cart into which can be added clips from any of your Clip Bins. Clips moved to your Cart will still remain in your Bin. If you want to remove a clip from your Cart, click on the left pointing arrows (<<) next to that clip in your Cart. When your Clip Cart is ready, select Proceed to Checkout at the bottom. |
